Discuss how various composers have explored the concept of journeys throughout their texts.Journeys can be enjoyably adventurous, or traumatic and stressful. A journey can be a reflection of life or a walk to the general store to buy the newspaper. They can either be physical, inner or imaginative. Physical journeys create challenges as people travel to new places. Inner journeys create opportunities for people to develop and examine their inner lives. Imaginative journeys allow us to enter different worlds created by the imaginations of others or ourselves. These journeys are all established in Mark Twains novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Phillip Noyce's Film Rabbit Proof Fence and the Board of Studies Text The Ivory Trail. These various composers have all presented journeys that are challenging and involve life- changing events. The central idea of Mark Twain's novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the physical exploration of the new worlds down the river and the emotional experiences to be encountered. The physical journey within the novel represents the idea of life itself as an adventure, full of challenges for the young. Also wide shots are used to show the scale of the desert. At the beginning of the film, the main elements of the plot are set up, such as Molly's connection to her home. For Huck the river is emphasized as a symbol of liberty and security 'I never felt easy till the raft was. She has been patient, reflective and thoughtful. The main plot within the film is the girl's journey home. She has been pushed around but she has not cowered in the face of cultural oppression and white adult authority. In overcoming these, Molly in particular learns and grows so that the physical journey parallels her journey to adulthood. The last few chapters mark the first moments of maturity for Huck. A simple script is used, so the film relies on visually compelling cinematography of the landscape and people to tell the story and to capture the audience's attention. Twain has provided many interactions and tensions between the characters and their relationships with Huck. Also grounds shots of police cars are shown to present the means of travel. The emotional destination and home and family are the reason for the physical journey and are what motivates the girls to carry on through every difficulty. The language of Huck reveals aspects of the idea of journey. Molly and her mother have a close relationship, and looking quietly around at her world makes Molly smile.
