Newspaper articles were taken from 'The Times' and 'The Daily Express' on Wednesday 29th January 2003.The first article I have taken is from 'The Times'. It is very simply presented. The main title reads: "Man killed trying to foil robbers was 'good citizen'". The words are written in big black bold letters and are accompanied by a large colour picture. The author of this article has used a neutral title to head his story. The title gives very little information about the man and is neither positive nor negative. The story has no sub-titles and is only illustrated by one large picture of the man with his daughter (approximately the same size as the whole text). Underneath the picture is a line briefly describing the picture, informing us that the man had a daughter and saying why the man was shot dead. The content of the article is very factual and describes the story in quite a lot of detail. The first line tells us the whole story in very brief detail: 'A 36-year-old man was shot dead in the street as he tried to note the registration number of a robber's car.' The author follows this line with a more detailed description of the event. Instead of just saying 'A 36-year-old man' the author gives his name, his profession
The whole article is written in standard typed writing and although it has been partially broken up by the picture it still looks quite boring and unappealing to read. One friend, Mr Abdul Iftikar said, "He (Mr Hussain) would always go out of his way to help people". In this article there is significantly less text than in the article from 'The Times'. and says he 'had a five-year-old daughter and young wife soon expecting their second child'. The article is illustrated by three pictures: the main picture is the same of that in the article from 'The Times' and has a line underneath saying 'BRAVE: Tasawar Hussain, seen here with his daughter, chased the robbers'. Another picture is also contained in the main box and is of the front of a car, showing the car's number plate. " This is a very different approach from 'The Times' who begin reeling off information about the event straight from the first line and do not use descriptive words such as 'heroic' or 'vicious' before words. Similar to 'The Times' article the author of this story has used quotes from both Tasawar's friends and from Detective Superintendent Allan Doherty of the West Yorkshire CID. Overall this article talks more about Mr Hussain's heroic actions than giving detailed information about the event. Both newspaper articles have used the quote 'Out of a sense of public duty he has paid the ultimate price' as said by Mr Doherty. 'The Times' keep their sentences simple and to the point, as opposed to 'The Express' who put in emotive language and unnecessary descriptive words to try and make the story seem more dramatic. 'The Times', a broadsheet newspaper, gives a lot more information about the event and there is significantly more writing.
