Barbie

Growing up with an older brother and a younger sister we learned to entertain ourselves. Many times people could see us dressing up my brothers Ninja Turtles in Barbie clothes or even my brother playing outside in our flooded back yard with our Barbie boat. Together with my sister we have well over fifty Barbie dolls, numerous Kens, and some Skippers. In fact the past two years my mothers has made my sister and I Barbie dresses like our prom dresses. Even though I have so many Barbie's I have never seen her as a negative role model.
Even though an expert like Marilyn Ferris Motz believes that Barbie is very outdated and teaches us to conform, I believe that Barbie is very positive role model and is not outdated. As I played with my Barbie's I learned more about sharing and playing well with others. Barbie's were always something my friends and I could play with; we never had to bring our own over because we all had enough for everyone to play. My sister and I had tubs full of clothes, which also helped us obtain a fashion sense. Some people may think this is a negative thing for us to learn, but I believe that it helped us understand what was accepted in our culture.
Hilary Tham says that Barbie is "always smiling, eyes wide with admiration, even when we yank off an arm with a hard-to-take-off dress", I believe she is always smiling because she is happy with who she is. Barbie teaches us to enjoy who we are and to smile even though things may not be how we want them to be.
It its also widely said that Barbie's proportions will cause girls to believe that they have to be super thin, with large breasts, and long blonde hair. However, in my time, I have never thought I needed to look like Barbie. My take on this is that parents need to make sure that the girls who play with a Barbie doll know that she is not a real person and that the girl doesn't need to be like her.
