We Real Cool
There are many situations and instances such as curfews, under-aged drinking, and smoking where teenagers are considered to be misbehaving or troublesome. Yet, they are judged by the standards that society has set. The only things that are considered right are the things their parents or other adults tell them. The poem "WE REAL COOL," by Gwendolyn Brooks goes against all the ground rules set for a modern day society and is sending out the message to live life to the fullest. Many people consider themselves to be cool. Stanza 1, lines 1 and 2 says "WE REAL COOL WE SKIP SCHOOL," meaning teenagers of this day and time do certain things like skip school, fight, and go to the Principal's office because they want to be looked upon as being a cool person. They think that doing this gives them a smaller chance of being called names such as weak, sorry, or scary. Teenagers do things like this because they intend to have as much fun as they can. This is the only way some teenagers know how to achieve the goal of being cool and also having fun. Even though students know how unlawful it is to do things of this nature such as fight, and skip school they consider these actions because having fun is more important. All o
They think getting in trouble with their parents is a part of life and is something that they just have to deal with if they want to have as much fun as they can. The writer then takes a turn in line 8 and says "WE DIE SOON" meaning that life is not everlasting so enjoy it while you can. After all of the partying, skipping school, fighting, dancing, and staying out late your carefree life will surely come to an end. Stanza 2, lines 3 and 4 says "WE LURK LATE WE STRIKE STRAIGHT," meaning teenagers of this century want to stay out later then they should because they feel that this too is a way of living life to the fullest. She thinks teens today need to stop and really think about what it really means to live life to the fullest as she has. say statistics from the NATIONAL YOUTH and RELIGION surveys. Teenagers can finally let everything go like book reports, term papers, and most importantly teachers. In conclusion, unlike many other writers Gwendolyn Brook's "WE REAL COOL" goes against the views that society has set and poses her own idea about living life to the fullest. Many parents in today's society discourage their children from listening to certain music like rap and rock because it has a negative effect on the decisions that their children will make in the future. However, teenagers of this day and time feel the need to break their parents rules by staying out late and not doing their household duties. Some teenagers feel that this time is much too early come in the house. Stanza 3, line 5 says "WE SING SIN" this is related to the musical entertainment that teens listen to. Parents give their children rules and guidelines to follow such as curfews and chores to better them, so they will have discipline for themselves and for others.
