The results of a pernicious society on love: Love in Emily Brontė's, Wuthering Heights, is both a dark, consuming force that when influenced by society destroys characters, as well as a means for redemption and happiness when left to develop independently. For Heathcliff and Catherine love is a destructive power that ruins both of their lives. Brontė's later parallel of Young Catherine and Hareton's relationship gives hope that love can indeed transcend social boundaries. Love drives the story forward, and is the principle cause of all major conflicts. Brontė uses Wuthering Heights both to make a commentary on the destructiveness of love and the destructive tendencies of society in general. Wuthering Heights, is a battleground between character's natures and their obligations and positions in their societies. The Earnshaw Family proves early on to be driven by passion. Earnshaw senior's spontaneously adopts Heathcliff. Both Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw are consumed by a wildness in both their behavior as children and their destructive love for one another. Wherein, lovers are traditionally compared to opposing forces, Heathcliff and Catherine are often describes as almost the same person. "He's more myself than I am. Wha
Young Catherine is young Linton's foil. By contrast, Young Catherine's relationship with Hareton, is more the ideal of love. But in reality Heathcliff is the only man with whom she could have ever been happy. In her refusal to marry Heathcliff, she allows society to destroy the pure and passionate love they share, and damns them to misery. He sees Hareton and Young Catherine as a chance to redeem his past mistakes. Do I want to live? What kind of living will it be when you - oh, God! Would you like to live with your soul in the grave?"(191/2)Heathcliff blames Catherine for their separation. "( 96) The way they are described by Brontė, foreshadows the tragedy of their love. While the first Catherine lets society dictate her path in love, and by doing so brings misery on all involved, Young Catherine who is already brought up in society chooses to ignore social guidelines and pursue a relationship with illiterate Hareton, and by doing so achieves happiness. He realizes the end of his time is fast approaching and rejoices in his reunion with Catherine. Their more subdued love lacks the destructive nature and passion that Catherine and Heathcliff share. Catherine and Heathcliff are so closely tied together, they seem to be one person- if not one soul. He seeks revenge on everyone who has hurt him. She too inherits qualities from her namesakes; however they prove to be the better of both of their natures. Their love has grown out of eventual friendship and caring for one another. She denies herself and her true nature by marrying Linton; inadvertently setting in motion the tragedy of her love triangle between Heathcliff, Linton and herself.
