             Everyday Use From a Sociological Standpoint
             I went to see Everyday Use, which was directed by Marymount's own Bruce Schwartz. It was based on a short story by Alice Walker. Starring in the short film are Rachell Luttrell, Baadja-Lyne, Karen ffokes, and Gary Poux. There are a few reasons why this film was shown. To show what Mr. Schwartz did whilst on sabbatical, to bring to life a well-known short story, and to entertain all those interested. The film can be seen as educational, because it showed progress in society. Dee was moving with society, whereas her mother chose to remain still in time and let society move around her.
             Personally, I quite thoroughly enjoyed the short film. I was especially interested in going to see it because I had already seen a film done by Mr. Schwartz based on a Langston Hughes story and had liked it. Everyday Use made an impact on me. After leaving the auditorium, I continued to think about it. I wondered if there were people like Mama who were set and content in their ways. I love change and progress so much; it was interesting to see a character that was satisfied with their life as it was. It showed that simplicity really should be valued. Life is easier that way. While I support progress, we are now consumed with cell phones, email, and instant messaging. From what I saw, most people took pleasure in the film. As I was exiting the auditorium, I could overhear people conversing. They were sharing what their thoughts and feelings on the film, how it affected them individually. The next day at school, students still found it a topic of interest. Therefore, I feel that it affected the greater majority of those who saw it.
