Concert Review
The fall night was clear and calm and the breeze warm at the Hershey Stadium onSeptember 11, 2003. The stage blazed with light and music poured out of the amps to fill thearea with the unique musical talent of Dave Matthews and his fellow band members.Looking around the crowd, I saw young people with purple hair and baggy jeans, middleaged couples holding hands and singing along and even an older man who looked like hewas in his sixties and was clearly enjoying the show. Dave Matthews Band is nowhere closeto being a conventional band. But then, considering the exceptionally diverse group ofpeople that enjoy their music, no one would expect them to be. Dave Matthews Band, which also happens to be one of the the top touring bands inAmerica, is a multiracial, multigenre act. It sells out football stadiums in minutes, yet theband lives in a small town and generally declines publicity and interviews. The music theymake is difficult to describe. Although compared by some to the Grateful Dead and Phishbecause of their ability to attract hordes of fans from different ages, races and backgrounds, the sound is undeniably of a genre all its own. It has a light and mellow yet intense style that
] Jazz music first appearedsometime in the 1890s, and originated in New Orleans. This provides the sound with chordalparalellism. This is one of Dave Matthews Band's more popular songs and everyone sang alongwith Dave as he played. I was so excitedthat he chose to play this one first because it's one of my favorite songs of theirs. " Some songs are veryintense and pensive, others are light, airy and carefree. " Other famous jazz musicians from this time include:Gene Krupa, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, James P. The feeling of unity and pride wasalmost palpable and Dave seemed to respect the need for few words. The instruments in the background go upand down with Dave's voice, but a few times, other instruments will come out and play avariation of their own. The crowd seemed to come together in our common loss andemotion. [*Note: One requirement for this paper was to give a historical background of thetype of music that the band plays. His songs can be fun, light and playful and make you feel good or they can communicate the darkness of loss, depression and hopelessness.
