wuthering heights

Wuthering Heights is a classic novel of possessive and thwarted passion, and examines a passionate and overwhelming love between its central characters, Catherine and Heathcliff.Emily's Bronte's novel is unique first of all for its lack of psychological dismay. Never, in a novel, did so many people hate each other with such zest. Passion in this novel does not only concern love but passion also manifests itself in the form of hatred, jealousy and fits of madness.Everyone hates, no one disguises evil in this book; no one is "nice." It is surprising to come across a Victorian novel, which does not moralize, and yet is very far from amoral. How strange, in Victorian fiction, to see passion treated as the natural pattern of life. Passion, hate and pity abound in Bronte's dramatic story of Heathcliff and Catherine's tragic love on the untamed Yorkshire moors. Their love is profound and filled with passion unlike any other. Its intensity

However even this novel leaves one wondering how Woman will confront those passions inside of her. Catherine and Heathcliff spend almost every waking hour together and inevitably fall in love. In Agnes Grey, these passions are barely explored. The confronting brutality and sadism that lurks beyond the surface encompasses all who enter Wuthering Heights, both character and reader alike. For men in the Victorian period, women had two roles. In Wuthering Heights the psychological deaths of patriarchal stereotypes are personified in full measure. Hovering oddly before these two novels is Anne Bronte's work Agnes Grey. Finally, in Emily's novel Wuthering Heights, the angel and the monster wage war, confront each other in a long narrative of violence, passion and murder. Whenever Catherine and Heathcliff talk about their love, their tone is high and wild. builds from their childhood until the untimely death of Catherine. This journey into the psyche encompasses the entire novel in Emily's work Wuthering Heights. In Jane Eyre, the Bertha figure is consumed par in fire and our heroine goes off to be married. Not until Jane Eyre do we see a central female character who goes through a systematic progression of self-worth and awareness. Whereas, in Jane Eyre, we are presented with a governess who embarks on a physically arduous and psychologically transforming journey to self-discovery.
