great food/great fun
I like restaurants with gimmicks - strippers, gender benders, you-be-the-chef... and usually I have a great time because I love being entertained, and in general, I am easily entertained. So, does a restaurant with a full arcade cut the mustard? The verdict is still out, but surprise, I can tell you that the food at Dave and Buster's isn't horrible. It's got a really ambitious menu, although you should never forget that it's a chain. The large menu covers predictable territory: quesadillas, salads, steak, seafood, pasta, and ribs but within each category there are notable attempts at uniqueness and excitement that are for the most part, successful. With its fancy menu options and white linens (not to mention video games and Skeeball) Dave and Buster's is a full notch and a half above Friday's, Bennigans, and places like Applebee's. (This can be a great thing or a not-so-great thing depending on who you are.) Take for example, Dave and Buster's appetizers offering. It's large and packed with the cheesy and greasy omnipresent standbys - nachos, quesadillas and wings, each with a few interesting, even daring variations (like Fajita Beef Nachos, Shiitake and Avocado Nachos, or Chicken Nachos)
The Scene The best thing about Dave & Buster's is that wild packs of snotty teens aren't allowed. D & B's have and adhere to their "no minors" rule (unless they're with family) by placing a beefy bouncer out front. The video games at Dave and Buster's are varied, recent and decent - some cost at least a dollar, others even $5 for one play. The Huli Huli Salmon entree was my favorite - a moist grilled salmon steak marinated in Hawaiian huli huli sauce (a light soy/sesame/ginger concoction). 95 or something like that) Entrees The bulk of the menu offers many steak, chicken, pasta, giant salads, sandwiches, and seafood options, again with chain favorites and racy (that's chain food racy) tweaks. All this, plus hollering loons make for a noisy eating experience but the tables are far enough away from the arcade, and the ceilings high enough to subdue some of the sound. You won't be able to saunter up to a video game and drop in a quarter - Dave (or maybe it's Buster) thought of a way to innocuously rip you off by making you buy a $1 PowerCard (tm) to play. The Power Card (tm) is kind of like credit card, which makes it easy to spend $50 lickety-split. ___ In general some of the food's surprisingly decent. It's probably cheaper to go to an arcade, but then you have to contend with the aforementioned wild packs of teens. And with their full bar (err, two full bars), they also offer giant signature drinks. The Shiitake and Avocado nachos, with black beans, cilantro, salsa and sour cream was decent even though the sour cream and cheese subdued the shiitake, and the black beans had no flavor.
