Farenheit 451
"If they give you ruled paper, write the other way." a man named Juan Ramon Jimenez once said. This quote is the placed right in the beginning of the book Fahrenheit 451. I think this quote sums up the entire book very well. The book is set far into the future, where houses are fire-proof and firemen work as agents for the government. The majority of the population is glued to their TV's where they are constantly fed a stream of government propaganda to keep them from thinking for themselves. One Fireman, Montag does not quite fit into the mold and decides to take on the system. Fahrenheit 451 was written to show the dangers that oppressive government can do "irreparable damage to society by limiting the creativity and freedom of its people." The book was written in the early 1950's, shortly after World War II. There are numerous conclusions and arguments that many people have came to in the books 50+ year life. Ray Bradbury's opinion on the strict control of which the editors had over an author's creativity and originality expressed in their books and the "oppressive political climate" of the post World War II United States are two of the most prevalent. Animal Farm was published within a few yea
Ever so often the bird would kill itself but then as soon as it died the Phoenix would rise from is own ashes and be reborn all over again. In the end of the book the city of Phoenix is destroyed and maybe the majority of the rest of the country was to follow in the same footsteps. Blacks express themselves in Uncle Tom's Cabin and it makes whites feel uncomfortable. The recent doings of the Department of Homeland Security seem like they would be able to get out of control if not kept in check. Sooner or later people won't have any views on anything. rs of Fahrenheit 451 as many people were frightened of the growing threat of the United States becoming and oppressive and maybe even totalitarian. Montag and his newly found friends embark on quest to start over where the last Phoenix once stood. In the 1950 it was illegal to be a Communist. The author quotes letters that people have sent to him over the years asking him to change his books to better suit different classes and groups of people. The United States did not grow up into massively oppressive country. People's views are not banned and there aren't Nazi book burnings taking place to stop anyone who express themselves, for the most part. So Montag's government burns it and kills the people who read it. So McCarthy black lists, imprisons, and basically silences anyone with that point of view. Bradbury's concern with McCarthyism is that every man or woman should be allowed to express him or herself.
