Title IX

America is a land of opportunity, equality and freedom. It is a place were people can come and have rights and be able to do the things they want to do, and be who they want to be. Title IX of the education amendments act of 1972 was set up for that reason. Title IX is a federal law that states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."-title IX. Title IX was created in 1972 and was set up to ensure equality for everybody no matter what sex, male or female, in many aspects of education. The law prohibits biases based on sex and gives women equal rights and opportunities to participate in activities. Title IX applies to all aspects of education, but my main focus today is the affect it has had on sports. Title IX applies to all educational institutions, both public and private, that receive federal financial funds. Sense most colleges and universities receive federal funds, they must then abide by the regulations set forth by Title IX so this affects schools on a large national level. Title IX affects athletics in 3 ways

2) scholarships- it requires the number of scholarships to be given out for men and women, to be proportional to their sports participation. 3) Title IX requires equal treatment towards men and women's sports, such as facilities, equipment, practice times and fields, traveling, promotion, and recruiting. This does not mean that money should be split between men's and women's sports because some sports such as football require more equipment then say a women's sport such as soccer which the only major piece of equipment is shin-guards, it just has to be proportional to the sports involvement and specific needs. women's soccer team the ability to go on and win the 1996 world cup. It does not however require there to be identical sports for men and women. Since its installment in 1972, Title IX has been extremely successful in providing women equal opportunities in athletics. Women's sports have gone from being virtually unrecognized to being popular. With Title IX, we affirm what can be accomplished when we allow all Americans--men and women--an equal opportunity to be their best"-Richard W. These are the basic guidelines and goals that Title IX is intended to accomplish. Title IX effects everybody, men and women, whether you realize it or not. It has given women the ability to go to good colleges with scholarships to compete at high levels and achieve their dreams and goals, as previously they were limited in many ways to do so. As Cheryl Miller, of the 1984 women's Olympic gold winning basketball team said, "without title IX, I'd be nowhere".
