Globalization and technology are the major issues in the economic world today.
While some believe globalization and technology have brought great benefits, others feel
they have deteriorated the prevailing living conditions in the world. Ursula Franklin's
speech "Peace, Technology and the Role or Ordinary People", emphasizes how
globalization and technology have worsened the condition of the common man. However,
even though I agree with Franklin's assertions and reasoning, I would like to include that
globalization and technology have brought about some significant improvements, by
creating more employment opportunities and establishing peace between countries.
Currently, globalization is defined as the "market driven war" for the common
good. Franklin in her speech says, "Global political realities have changed in a strange
way since 1989" (pg 314). I agree with this statement made by Franklin. With the
turbulence of the cold war coming to an end, one had hoped that the major world powers
would convert to peace. Futhermore, people hoped that money spent on arms and
ammunitions would be used to eradicate poverty, build educational institutions, preserve
the environment and towards other needs of the society. However, none of these priorities
were turned into reality. Moreover, war was transposed into another key, as mentioned by
Franklin in her speech. In addition to the nuclear menace existing between countries, war
has been updated with modern instruments to assist in globalization. Globalization – a
term used to describe the process of making something worldwide based on the
interdependence of the entire world and its people. How far does this definition hold true
