an inspector calls

Goole of obviously a pun on the word ghoul, meaning ghost. He is a very big(not literally) character with a extreme presence that is felt from the minute he enters . He is like a spirit sent to uncover the truth about Daisy Renton/Eva Smith. He as a great power to change the mood of the conversation to the way he wants it to go, this comes from his presence that is felt.
His lines in the play are to the point, some short and sweet, others hard hitting and almost trying to give a particular character a feeling of guilt, this works in his favour because it pressures them into telling him what he needs to know but would not normally get from simply questioning. He from the beginning knows who is the main suspect and has made his own mind up about the characters themselves, and uses that to advantage as we see in the play. Each of the characters fear the inspector even though they try not to let on that they do.
He is harder on the characters that don't tell him the truth, and the ones which try to give him a hard time, such as when he says to Mr Birling "Don't stammer and yammer at me again, man, I'm loosing my patience with you people". Where as with Gerald his words are "if your easy with me, ill be easy with you". But inside that tough outer shell he is a gently man, and this is evident when he try's to stop Sheila from blaming herself too much, he takes pity on her. Most of the time in this whole thing he makes them tell him things he already knows my acting like he knows all of whats going to be said.
Inspector Goole has many roles to assume in this play, inspector(uncovering the truth) story-teller (about the girl, filling in the background of Eva Smith) Also a father figure( He talks to them like a father, minus the love, affection e.t.c)
