The Scarlet Letter
This Report refers to the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne was very inspirational to the scholars of today; this novel in particular would amaze Hawthorne on how many readers it attracts. The depth of each character of the novel represents a symbol of religious theocracy, whether good or bad. This novel continues to be a best seller a century after it was published. The Scarlet Letter also influenced my new found opinion of historical writings, which previously were not the most intriguing and knowledgeable one.In Nathanial Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne was creating a form of fiction he called the psychological romance. This refers back to the time of Puritan Theocracy and also the art of romantic writers. Hawthorn was inspired by writers such as James Fennimore Cooper and Sir Walter Scott, also writers of Romance literary. This novel was the culmination of Hawthorne's experimentation with themes about the subjects of Puritans, sin, guilt, and the human conflict between emotions and intellect.The setting of the book also symbolizes the Puritan themes. Chillingworth continuously torment shows Hester and Dimmesdale that they can't escape their sins and Dimmesdale must confess himself among the scaffold, the only place in which Dimmesdale can escape Chillingworth. Each character represents an emphasized meaning of authority and persuasiveness in the Puritan town. Chapter two sets forth the conflicting scene. In this chapter Hester is led out of jail, through a crowd of Puritan Critics, onto a scaffold. Hester than confesses that the letter is a mark of the Black Man. Pearl continues to torment her mother for the sin she had done, and forces her to continue to wear her hair up and the scarlet letter on her chest. It is in Boston in the seventeenth century. In the conclusion Hester and Pearl deport to Europe, where they live for a while. The reader is introduced to a more descriptive acknowledgement of the Puritan setting and is left off with the setting of a prison door. Hester returns to Boston where she continued to where the scarlet letter. He is determined into forcing Dimmesdale's identity. The forest represents a world not governed by Puritan law and customs, which seem to dominate most of Boston. The letter is now known for "able" instead of adultery and she dies giving help to women in solace, who need help.
