Simple Plans

There are many techniques used to present ideas in drama and many of them are seen in Miller's contemporarily written 'The Crucible' and the older 'Macbeth' by Shakespeare. Despite the difference, many techniques are the same although the ideas may differ. Out of the many ideas and themes in 'Macbeth' the theme of ambition and its consequences, motives and ability to change people is most useful for displaying dramatic technique 'The Crucible' however discusses the theme of integrity and the effects that it has, in this case with a group of girls in an American town.Drama is indeed an effective way of presenting ideas to an audience. For the purpose of a play is not to be read or heard but to be acted out dynamically and dramatically. It is an asset for the writer and the audience to be able to actually see the ways the characters interplay and react to each other and also the build up of tension, which can be seen in the body language acted out by the performers. It is this extra dimension which can make a play more effective in presenting the playwright's ideas and themes, A visual approach can have a deeper impact than that of a book. In addition in a play there is an actor actually trying to be the character. This mea

This is even more important as the audience already knows what the outcome is to be, so the path to get there must provide interest. The open conflict in a novel would not be as effective as it is the apparent realism of this scene which evokes audience emotional reaction. A prominent idea in this play is the need for integrity and honesty, but more importantly how a lack of these can affect society. This reveils clearly the extent to which Macbeth is being tormented by his guilt and paranoia but can also serve to involve the audience. By actually visualizing the way the characters relate to eachother a lot can be learned. The realization of what they have done and the consequences of discovery, but more significantly it is the extreme guilt and paranoia that reveils most about the characters. He is no longer and honourable soldier, instead he is no better than the former Thane of Cawdor who's title was inherited by Macbeth. This technique is effective in evoking emotions in the audience and making them focus more on the issues. A successful play is often made successful by the use of these techniques and they are definitely present in the Miller's 'The Crucible'. As shown by his statements he is more concerned with what is thought of himself than of saving lives and getting to the truth. They, like Macbeth are unsure of what is happening initially and therefore can experience some association with Macbeth. Miller also presents a society with a judge that lacks integrity. We do not see the ambition in Macduff that can be seen in Macbeth.
