Fuel Cells

Fuel Cells: The Ultimate Alternative to Combat Automobile EmissionsLast year, Hanover, Germany, hosted the World's Fair and Expo. Several countries joined together under one theme about which they all felt passionate. This theme was how countries are using technology to improve the nature of our environment. One exhibit focused on combustion engines and explained how fuel cells were already seen as the next technology to significantly reduce the greenhouse gases we emit with our automobiles. Many technologies have been studied over the past decades and yet not one has been tested long enough to be labeled as the most beneficial for consumers to lower the problems that the present internal combustion engines have created. The problem does not have an easy fix though. There are several obstacles which need to be evaluated before pollution will change which include government laws and consumers' interests. The only way this pollution crisis can be solved is through the technology of tomorrow. This technology is currently thought to be fuel cells, the best alternative. Before it can be understood why fuel cells are the best technology, we need to be educated on other alternativ

He states, "The single biggest factor in future air quality improvements in California will be simple fleet turnover - the continuing replacement of older gasoline cars with new gasoline cars that produce only 12 lb or less" of ozone precursors (Derr, 1994. Even though alternative fuels will be polluting much less, they are thought to be more efficient than the present technologies we have. On the other hand, one alternative which is being used worldwide is electricity. According to Derr, this alternative way of cleaning up the environment would allow people to still use gasoline powered vehicles and in turn, they would be doing more to alleviate the pollution problem than they would by purchasing an electric vehicle. The current results show that propane cannot power cars in the same manner as gasoline does today. Although electric cars are seen on the road, consumers still prefer to buy gasoline-powered cars over electric vehicles. Today it is not uncommon to see an electric car on the road or a hybrid, which is a combination between gasoline and electricity. The sticker price of one of these buses is $1. Already many major cities are ordering these buses which seems to be paving the way for future transportation technology. Most likely, the United States will not be able to meet the goals that it has set for itself in lowering fuel emissions; but, with the laws it is placing on industries such as the automobile industry, results may appear sooner than later. The PNGV brought the auto makers, Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors together with government agencies in order to improvement automobile technology. It takes two hours to fuel three buses.
