IDEAS Advanced Programmability
DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL AND MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS ENGINEERINGI-DEAS ADVANCED PROGRAMMABILITY FEATURE:Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements forComputer-Aided Design and ManufacturingUtilizing the advanced programmability features of the I-DEAS software package, it is possible to create a macro to run within the I-DEAS modeling environment that would automatically generate commonly used parts or geometries to supplement and speed up the modeling process. To define a macro within I-DEAS a user may simply capture the commands through a "Program File -> Create" option, create the program file directly through any text editor or use a combination of the two methods.
Although the objective was reached with respect to geometry and demonstration purposes, the objective to create a program that would aid and speed up the modeling process was not met; if a program is not reliable, it should not be used as a tool for aiding and speeding up the modeling process. Waguih, Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (91-411) Lecture Notes, 2004. The advanced programmability feature of I-DEAS is quite useful when applied within the proper context and to the appropriate part (rivet). Since method # 2 requires the use of the I-DEAS library and the library was not functioning at the time of this project, the project will deal exclusively with method #1. ISBN 0-201-38036-6· Noll, Bradley, I-DEAS ADVANCED PROGRAMMABILITY FEATURE: PARAMETRIC DESIGN OF A THREADED SCREW, 2002. The modeling of the threaded screw as a program file was intended to aid and speed up the modeling process and to demonstrate the advanced programming features and the ability to create parameterized parts within I-DEAS. Following the recommendations of Noll (2002), commands that require graphical interactions will be avoided in the creation of a parameterized rivet. In some cases program reliability was more desirable with respect to functionality and hence certain program options were eliminated, such was the case with the logic control statements. , I-DEAS Student Guide, 2001, ISBN 0-07-246065-2· Lee, K.
