A Comparison of Plays

Everyone pretends to be a model of propriety that shudders at the thought of notoriety. Sin is concealed in secret; the lies that are told become true. Most importantly, every worldly person is not one man, but rather a duo of conflicting personalities. The plays, "Blood Wedding" and "Miss Julie" both focus on reflecting the hypocrisies and dichotomies of each of its characters. In both of the plays, these pretenses of virtue are extracted by forbidden love affairs, facades created by lies, and the spurious idiosyncrasy between social classes. In "Blood Wedding", the bride is outstandingly hypocritical to agree to marry the bridegroom regardless of her undying love for Leonardo. The bride shows that she is aware of her hypocrisy by saying, "...[marriage] is a huge step to take" when asked if she was happy. Her response shows that she is fully aware of her interminable passion for Leonardo. Leonardo also reflects his own hypocrisies in "Blood Wedding" when he refers to the bride as "a slippery little thing." He is mischievously deluding his wife by mas

She, in turn, becomes hypocritical by doing to the bridegroom what Leonardo did to her when he married her cousin. This shows hypocrisy in the social status the bride has set up for herself, or lack thereof. She begs her servant for advice and comfort. He becomes hypocritical because earlier in the drama, he parades himself as a noble, respectable man not interested in destroying Julie's reputation. However, when Jean asks her to run away with him and bring money for the hotel, she admits, "I can't. However, this facade is shattered by the deed and hypocrisy shines through the broken pieces of the masquerade she so carefully performed. In both plays, hypocrisy becomes the center of a universe of betrayal and desire. He tells his wife he rode the horse to the blacksmith, when other clues later in the text (the servant says, "he was here. Her actions lead to the death of both men in her life, forcing her to realize actions have consequences. However, much of the distinction between the social classes is hypocrisy in and of itself. In "Blood Wedding", the bride creates a facade by lying to herself and to the bridegroom. The only character in "Miss Julie" that realizes the consequences attached to actions seems to be Kristine. " It seems that all her life things have been handed to her on a silver platter and she is finally realizing that nothing is really free.
