Desperado vs. El Mariachi

Desperado vs. El Mariachi Today Hollywood seems to put out action film after action film with the same explosions and lack of stylistic writing. El Mariachi was a refreshing change from the common Hollywood formula, with a great plot, and many stylistic elements written into the film. In Robert Rodriguez's Desperado, the sequel to El Mariachi, the outline of the plot is basically the same. The difference between the two films is that Desperado had a huge Hollywood budget and the obvious influence of Quentin Tarantino, which made the film drastically different. Original elements of El Mariachi (1992) Robert Rodriguez when contrasted with Hollywood derivative Desperado (1995) Rodriguez show typical shallow Hollywood filmmaking. The first factor when comparing El Mariachi to Desperado is their budget. Rodriguez made El Mariachi with a mere 7 thousand dollars of his own money, whereas Desperado had a 10 million dollar budget. Desperado's big budget allowed for much more elaborate action sequences and explosions such as the big gun fight scene in the end in which Antonio Banderas teams up with his old Mariachi friends, including the actor who played the mariachi in El Mariachi, t

Hollywood comedy also had to be added into the film, with actors such as Cheech Marin and Steve Buchemi. The Hollywood budget of Desperado allowed the addition of star actors such as Selma Hyek, and Antonio Banderas. These factors make it hard to separate the reputation of the actors from the actual characters that you are supposed to be thinking of the as in the film. This scene has much more action and explosions and cost more than all of El Mariachi however, the violent action scenes in El Mariachi are just as, if not, more shocking than those seen in Desperado. The sets in El Mariachi are also more realistic because it is filmed in an actual city in Mexico. That means that Rodriguez had to please his investors by making the film compatible with a typical audience. Many of the action scenes in Desperado are filmed on sets because the budget allows for things to be blown up and you cannot film these types of scenes on actual buildings in a city. Therefore El Mariachi is a more stylized, creative film than Desperado because it did not have the creative restrictions that are put on typical Hollywood cinema. The unknown Latin actors were also good in El Mariachi, but they could have speaking roles if any in Desperado because most of them probably do not speak English that well and therefore would not appeal to an American mainstream audience. Rodriguez, though a Texas native, decided to make the decision to make the film in Spanish, which is more believable considering that the film took place in Mexico. At first glance, Desperado and El Mariachi are somewhat similar. The film included stylish comedy that is unusual in a Hollywood film like when the hotel manager would dial up Moco was sped up to be humorous and at the same time to make sure that you knew he did it right away. For example Antonio Banderas is almost always in slow motion when he is shown shooting at people by himself in a shot, this is done so you focus on Banderas and his star status. El Mariachi does not include a sex scene because it is not dependent on superficial Hollywood sex, because there were no star's bodies to show off, which makes you concentrate on other more important, creative parts of the film. In this sex scene Hyek is topless, which seems to be one of the main reasons that people enjoy this film.
