Addiction Related to Crime: Punishment and Rehabilitation

             When habits or behaviors begin to dominate daily life and people find themselves powerless to stop the chaos despite the consequences or the desire to do so, then it is very likely that addiction is active. Addiction is a factor that causes people to offend and re-offend against Criminal Law. There is a close connection between crime and drug addiction, which makes it clear that drug addiction is an important factor in explaining crime and violence. In order to prevent this cause of crime, our society needs to approach criminals with rehabilitation in order to help them behave appropriately in society. According to a study by the National Centre on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, 80 percent of about 1.4 million inmates, men, and women are seriously involved with alcohol and drug abuse (Charles Blanchard). Studies also found that alcohol is often behind violent crimes such as murder and assault, while illegal drugs are more commonly associated with break-ins and robberies. Reports in China in the Aids Weekly magazine states that addicts who need to pay for drugs commit more than 30% of robberies (AIDS Weekly).
             While offenders can be addicted to drugs and alcohol, which causes them to commit crimes, they can also become addicted to committing the crime itself. They develop a need to offend, oftentimes because they crave the feeling or the "rush" that they get when breaking the law. When someone is suffering from the disease of addiction, they cannot stop behaving in a way that threatens to ruin their life. They are no longer able to care about the people and things around them. They become caught in the middle of addiction and can no longer see or hear anything that makes sense.
