Bilingual Education

             Bilingual Education has been a debated issue for decades now. Who benefits from a failing program? Being taught subject matter in one's own mother language is hard to do sometimes, grasping the meaning of the lecture is not an easy task for all students, let alone being taught subject matter in an unknown language.
             It is true that the official language of this country is English. English is the language business people communicate in, it is the language used at high paying jobs, and some say it is the language that is needed to become successful in this country. All this is true, but Bilingual Education is not aiming to shorten the success of bilingual students; instead, it is aimed at helping them enter the American society more smoothly and easily. If one's native tongue is not acknowledged, the students tend to hideout and miss out on general knowledge that is being taught in a tongue they do not understand.
             Bilingual Education is supposed to allow students time to assimilate and adapt to the new culture and the new language they will be dealing with in their everyday life, it is not supposed to keep them from emerging into English-only education, which is what it does sometimes. Bilingual Education is a great resource for immigrants and others who don't speak English to still keep getting educated in their native tongue as they maintain their self-esteem.
             Modernizing the principles behind the Bilingual Programs is great, and it helps immigrants and non-English speakers feel like there is a place at school where they belong. As a result, the language is no longer the barrier to having friends during the first months at this new setting. Nevertheless, it is important to note that if students stay in bilingual schooling for too long they are, in fact, isolating themselves from mainstream America.
