Ophelia

In the play Hamlet written by William Shakespeare, Prince Hamlet, has become mad, therefore causing his love, Ophelia, to go mad as well and to commit suicide. I intend to prove that Hamlet's madness was a cause of Ophelia's death by showing examples of where Hamlet's madness caused Ophelia to lose sanity as well. The part of the play where Hamlet believes Ophelia is involved in the plot that killed his father. Also, the climax of the play where Hamlet kills Ophelia's father believing that he was actually Cluadius. These are all examples of what caused Hamlet's love to lose touch with reality and finally take matters in her own hands, ending her life. When finding out the truth of his father's death, Prince Hamlet decides it best to act crazy. This way he can watch the king, Claudius without the Claudius knowing that Hamlet is spying on him. Polonius, Ophelia's father, then proceeds to tell the Cluadius and Gertrude, Hamlet's mother,

He tells her that he doesn't love her and never has. It is hard enough for Ophelia to learn of her father's death but when she finds out it was at the hands of Hamlet, she just can't take it anymore. When Hamlet starts becoming aggressive with his mother Polonius yells for help. He did not know it was Polonius for when the queen said, "O me, what hast thou done?" Hamlet says, " Nay, I know not. He says things such as "If thou dost marry, I'll give thee this plague for thy dowry. " (Act 3 Scene 1 Line 146) Here Hamlet, the man she loves, has just told her that if she ever gets married he asks that a plague be brought on any money or property she will bring to the marriage. Ophelia would not have ever thought of committing suicide had it not been for Hamlet's madness. When Hamlet hears this he automatically assumes that it is Claudius behind the arras and runs his rapier though the arras, killing Polonius. This angers Hamlet, so when he confronts her, he is verbally and partially physically abusing her. The king and queen decide it best to test this out. It was this insanity that caused her to go to the moat and drown herself. Hamlet mean while is watching this being set up and can't help but believe that Ophelia has had a hand in his father's death. She loses all senses of reality and is now insane. Hamlet has already determined that his Uncle Cluadius has murdered his father and is going to confront his mother to see if she had anything to do with his death.
