The Man

             Fatherhood is a quality that is passed on from generation to generation. A boy grows up following and learning by the actions of his dad. While learning from his father a boy finds his first hero. Walter Lee Younger, from Lorraine Hansberry's play A Raisin in the Sun and Troy Maxson, from August Wilson's play Fences have totally different up bringings. Their fathers have completely opposite views and opinions on what a father really is. The connection between Walter Lee Younger and his father Big Walter is a source of pride, while Troy Maxson inherits "the sins of the father."
             Walter Lee grew up in an environment where his father Big Walter, worked strenuous hours to provide for his family. Big Walter took pride in everything that came his way. He knew that his family was poor and would probably always be poor, but this never stopped him from holding his head high. His priorities were always in the right spot, to do what he thought was best for his family. Walter Lee grew up watching his father work himself to death just so his family is able to have a roof over their heads and food in their stomachs. Walter Lee embraced his father's work ethic. He awoke every morning dreading the day ahead of him. Walter Lee's job could not get any worse for a black man in the late 1950's. While blacks are fighting for their rights, Walter Lee is working for a white man, escorting him around. He does whatever it takes for his family to one day have a life they have always dreamed of.
             Walter Lee never was able to see "outside the box." He only looked at his father one-dimensionally. He couldn't see the pride that his father embraced when he woke up and went to work early and returned later from an extensive backbreaking day of work just so his family can survive.
