Concert Report
My first concert report will be on the performance by the Musaeus String Quartet on Tuesday, February 24. It featured Ms. Patrice Jegou as mezzo-soprano to the quartet. The string quartet consisted of Mr. Norbert Boehm and Mrs. Maria Geppert on the violin, Mr. Graham Tagg on the viola, and Mr. Mark Rodgers on the cello. Looking quickly over the program, the back of it consisted of the lyrics in German of the songs that Ms. Jegou was to perform. The first piece was Auf dem Wasser zu singen (Over the Water Singing) by Franz Schubert. As string quintet and quartets are meant for intimate settings, it provided the perfect setting for this piece. The piece wasn't played too loud by the quintet, more of a mezzo piano dynamic. Ms. Jegou's mezzo-soprano voice carried well over the instrumentals, in a mezzo forte dynamic. The quintet played more of an accompanying role in polyphonic melody. The tempo of the piece was at moderato pace. In other words, the whole tempo of the singer and quintet was in a singing/ballad pace. This is very appropriate as to simulate "singing over the water". The texture of the singing and instrumentals was very water-like. The harmonic consonance was also very effective in portraying the theme of
I look forward to hearing more performances by Ms. The slight tension in this piece seemed to me like a kettle of water building, as the piece builds towards the climax. I could not find out the definition of Vilia, but I think it refers to an object, thing or person. I noticed within the quartet, the violins were dominant through this piece, carrying the melody. The quintet was very effective in portraying the theme of the song through a 'weaved' texture, accented by a staccato playing style. I really enjoyed this piece because Ms. The light-hearted theme was very enjoyable as the previous sets were adventure and tension-filled. Despite the slight tension, the harmony was mostly consonant. The mixed texture plus the changing harmonies served its purpose well to exemplify the theme of restlessness. The first piece called Fantasia as stated in the program was to be played allegro moderato which meant fast and moderate. The tempo of the instrumentals was at a story-like moderato pace. Overall, I really enjoyed this particular Music at Noon performance set because the music played was very good "afternoon" music. To me Fantasia is a word that conjures up words like dreamy and hazy, the cello had the perfect mellow texture to illustrate this theme of fantasy. This piece is of the late Romantic style and had a jazzy, French quality to it.
