Medeival Art

Studying medieval art is an intriguing time in art history. Problems arise with location and time which it involved. Deciphering the geographical area when the Middle Ages begin and end is still debated. Knowing how this time period came about is essential to understanding it. The Christian religion had never been as influential in art as it was during the times of the middle Ages.

The medieval period can be loosely said to begin at around 300 A.D. through 1450 A.D. The place which encompasses medieval time includes Europe, and the regions of Asia and Africa. The Christian world of the middle Ages was not just in Europe in extended to the shores of the Mediterranean. Style was the most important characteristic to this time which was fueled by Christianity. Christianity the main influencing factor in the Middle Ages was not a product of the middle Ages but rather a revival of classic antiquity or using old ideas in this new era. Without the emphasis of Christian faith in the Middle Ages the significance of it may have been much less because of the accomplishment in art and architecture which Christianity brought about. Many ancient Mosaics still exist in their original form small Italian city north of Venice called Ravenna, many of these mosaics are from the middle ages and the Roman culture (Wood38). Some amazingly sophisticated works of art came out of this period. Sculpture in essence was reborn during this time because of the architectural purposes. Sometimes these late Gothic churches looked like walk in jewel cases. New ideas rooted from classical antiquity have helped this style which has been highly influential into the modern era of art.

Overall art in the middle ages was unlike any other time period in history. Finally the Gothic period which was from 1100 A. This period is known as the “Age of the Great Cathedrals” and marked its high point of the Church’s influence as an art patron. It achieved this in a stylistic fashion using new material and assortment of colors. The architecture was phenomenal and without it churches and cathedrals may not be what they are today. The church banned the images for decades. “Charlemagne became known as the father of Europe and one of the most important people in Western art (Wood xiv). Light also symbolized God, so walls were replaced by huge windows. Within the Byzantine era three other major styles existed those being Carolingian, Romanesque, and Gothic (Hofstatter 57). (Robinson, 55)

In the Byzantine world their was a period just before the 8th century where the church was rocked by fights between supporters of artistic images and those who considered them blasphemy.
