Defining Family differences

             Two Kinds, an exceptional piece of literature written by Amy Tan is about a mother and daughter at war with what is best for the daughter's future. The mother simply wants the daughter to be successful and strive for the best, while the daughter just wants to be herself. The concepts of culture and heritage are essential to the understanding of the story. Culture is defined as the behavior or pattern of beliefs and social norms of a group of people. Furthermore heritage is defined as being represented by the traditions and legacies handed down by past generations. In Two Kinds, The culture's and heritage's of both Jing Mei and her mother play important roles within the summary of the story.
             While Jing Mei is defined early as being rebellious and unappreciative, her mother is defined as being determined and demanding. Through the different heritages of the two it creates a major conflict within the story. Being that Jing Mei is born in America and her mother defined as the antagonist is a Chinese Immigrant, Jing Mei's mother is very tenacious about upholding her Chinese culture and heritage. The persistence of Jing Mei's mother is normal due to her Chinese background and consequently it becomes the center stage for their dispute. Because Jing Mei and her mother's culture's and heritage's are extremely different it places the both of them on two separate pages when it comes to the decisions of hobbies, interests, and career decisions of Jing Mei.
             Though the names were changed, Two Kinds is a story that goes into the real life of author Amy Tan. Tan writes the story simple just as her life was when she was younger. Tan was also a Chinese born in America and her mother was a Chinese
