             Although very uncharacteristic of a German novel, Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front has served as a testimony to the horrors of war and the negative effect it has on all people who are involved in it. Since the release of the book in 1928, only a decade after the end of World War I, it has raised much controversy pertaining to war, especially in Germany (Henningfield). Ultimately, Remarque's book portrays war in a realistic light and reveals the taxing effect it has on those who are involved. All Quiet on the Western Front makes clear what negative effects war has on the human body, the psyche, interactions with others, and overall morals and asserts that they are lasting and more often permanent ones.
             All Quiet on the Western Front wasn't received well in Germany for a number of reasons. The main reason was that the Nazi regime was still in power, they viewed the book as an insult and an attack on the greatness of the Germany they wanted to control. Remarque's ideas were hostile toward the Nazis' ideology and intended course of action. To the Nazis, the novel seemed to symbolize the beliefs of men who had stabbed Germany in the back by conceding defeat in a war the Nazis claimed their country should have won. The book was burned on a number of occasions at the infamous book burning ceremonies of Berlin ("Remarque").
             Another potential reason for opposition to the book could have been the time setting. Remarque set the fictional story in the last few years of the war when Germany begins to grow weak and the U.S. joins the Allied forces in their cause. This was quite understandably taken as an insult by many Germans, even though Remarque was more than likely only trying to illustrate the sense of defeat war has the potential to bring about.
