Beowulf

             In the epic poem Beowulf, written by an unknown author, the Germanic view of a good leader is clearly defined in the poem. A good leader possesses many qualities that makes him distinguishable from ordinary people. In Beowulf, the Germanic view of a good leader is a leader that has these traits: courage, valor strength, and integrity. Great leaders were always remembered if they were in the scop's tale.
             In Beowulf, the first person to display the qualities of a good leader was Shild, because Shild sets the standard for being a good leader. Shild goes from being an orphan, which is barely above slave in the Germanic society, to becoming king. Shild became king because he was a great leader. Shild's integrity allowed him to gain the respect of others because and because he lived in a kingless society, the people made him king. The Germanic view of a good leader comes from the reign of Shild, because Shild displayed many great qualities that changed him from a nobody, into a somebody.
             Hrothgar was the next great king to display the leadership qualities of Shild. Hrothgar protected his people from harm, and he always shared the spoils of war with this thanes. Hrothgar's kingdom prospered because he possessed the qualities of a great leader: wisdom, bravery, courage, valor, strength, and integrity. Hrothgar was brave and strong in battle, but he was also a wise king. Because Hrothgar possessed the leadership qualities that were exemplified by Shild, he is considered a good leader.
             Beowulf was the next great leader in the poem that exemplified the Germanic view of a good leader. Beowulf leads his comitatus to many to many victories and Beowulf himself has performed great deeds. Beowulf boasts about all of his accomplishments and he shows bravery, wisdom, courage, valor, strength, and integrity when he defeats Grendel.
