War Poems- comparing

             Compare Tennyson's view of war in 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' to Owen's view of war in 'Dulce et Decorum est'.
             In his poem 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' Alfred Lord Tennyson portrays war as the glorious pursuits of brave young men fighting proudly in the name of their country. Wilfred Owen's 'Dulce et Decorum est' is set in a different era of warfare and focuses instead on the futile waste of life and the horrors faced by the young men who died in the 'Great war'.
             Tennyson's 'Charge of the Light Brigade' is a famous poem about the bravery of the young cavalry men who rode to an almost certain death at the battle of Balaclava in the Crimea in 1854.
             the Light brigade rode into a valley due to misinterpreted orders and aimed to capture the
             artillery. they knew that the orders had been misunderstood
             but knew that it was not their position to question
             the orders of the Major. The poem takes you through the battle, and parts emphasise the horrific nature-
             The third stanza tells of braking through the line, then retreating, with great human losses-
             'Then they rode back, but not,
             The message is skin deep, and states that Loyalty, honour and glory are characteristics of great and heroic men. Blind self sacrifice is to be admired in soldiers. There is no greater way to die, than to die for your country. We should all be inspired by these brave men.
