Wayne and Chan

Images are texts that can, and should be read. Most of the time we don't know we're even doing it. The reading of an image often comes in the form of thoughts, feelings, and emotions. The significance of a piece that a viewer forms is unique to the individual viewer by that thoughts, and emotions are individual traits. Given that there are two images--both being of cowboys. One of John Wayne and the other of Jackie Chan. In further analyzation of the images one might ask what makes a cowboy, a cowboy? When one sees the image of one as supposed to the other, are their thoughts and feelings the same, or are they different? Certain images within the two photographs allow the viewer to analyze and interpret further. One of the images is of Jackie Chan, a popular martial

His pistol is casualy drawn, almost with a "bring it on" type attitude. A man who possesses everything a man should strive to be. Does that mean there were no Asian cowboys? No, it simply implies that we as a society don't draw any association with the old west to someone of Asian descent. Wayne is seen in a tradional cowboy get-up, whereas Chan attire has more of an ecclectic twist on the word cowboy Where as the other is of John Wayne an American image, icon, and role model. Chances are, on the top of the list stands one name, synanomous with everything a cowboy encompasses. Chans picture carries a more light hearted tone. More than just an actor playing the role of a Cowboy, John Wayne stands an American Idol. One usually would regard this picture of Chan as one of comedic value, one without any real meaning or significance. He has a big grin on his face with his hands drawn in the form of a gun. Where Jackie is synanamous with martial arts, John wayne is with the old west and cowboys. Just the simple fact that Jackie is Asian takes away from any association that he's an old west cowboy. When one sees Jackie chan the first thing to come to mind is most likely his ability to perform martial arts, not his role as an old west cowboy. The light is set in the foreground so that there is a shadow that is cast on the wall.
