             Throughout my young life their has been many events and people who I feel have changed my life, but last summer a boy who was attending Sailing School really made an impact on me. He made me realize that we have challenges we had to overcome at a young age. This boy whose name was Michael had a learning disability, and made it very hard to teach him. The very first day we hold a swimming test and immediately he could not do it, but once I got into the water with him and swam along him he showed me that he did have swimming capability. He could really do what ever he put his mind too, although he had to work 3 times harder then any other kid.
             I've been sailing since I was 5 years old, and I have always found it to be very challenging and enjoying. Every time I am out sailing I feel at peace and I love the sport profusely. I've been racing in the International Lightening Association as a skipper on my own boat that was handed down from my father. A skipper is like the captain of the boat; the boat I sail on takes a 3-person crew, being a skipper for the past 4 years has really taught me how to make decisions in the flash of a second. This leadership role landed me the job at SLA as a sailing instructor.
             Squam Lakes Association (SLA), runs a great sailing program for children 8-12, 12-16, and adult private lessons. The younger kids sail an Optimist pram, which they sail by themselves, and they really learn the schematics of sailing: how to steer, trim the sails, and most importantly how to make decisions on their own. For many of the children in the 8-12 class, when they are put on a sailboat all by themselves it is the first time there is no one there to make decisions for them. The young adult class sail a two person boat called a Club Junior where they learn how to sail a boat, but also practice racing. Learning to work with another person is very hard on a sailboat and communication is very key to being a good sailor. ...
