College Admission Paper
Throughout my young life their has been many events and people who I feel have changed my life, but last summer a boy who was attending Sailing School really made an impact on me. He made me realize that we have challenges we had to overcome at a young age. This boy whose name was Michael had a learning disability, and made it very hard to teach him. The very first day we hold a swimming test and immediately he could not do it, but once I got into the water with him and swam along him he showed me that he did have swimming capability. He could really do what ever he put his mind too, although he had to work 3 times harder then any other kid.I've been sailing since I was 5 years old, and I have always found it to be very challenging and enjoying. Every time I am out sailing I feel at peace and I love the sport profusely. I've been racing in the International Lightening Association as a skipper on my own boat that was handed down from my father. A skipper is like the captain of the boat; the boat I sail on takes a 3-person crew, being a skipper for the past 4 years has really taught me how to make decisions in the flash of a second. This leadership role landed me the job at SLA as a sailing instructor.
When I looked at Michael he was by himself and seemed upset. An the one person was Michael, when I looked over to his boat he had his head down and wasn't holding any of the parts of the boat to have control over it. ciation (SLA), runs a great sailing program for children 8-12, 12-16, and adult private lessons. For many of the children in the 8-12 class, when they are put on a sailboat all by themselves it is the first time there is no one there to make decisions for them. Michael could not adapt to the situation and with his learning disability he had very hard time learning the schematics of sailing. Michael was in the Optimist pram class where he was put on a boat all by himself. He did not know how to sail, and when he was put on the boat he could remember how to do any of the sailing techniques that I taught him in the classroom. Many kids have a problem being all by themselves, but they adapt to the situation and learn to have fun sailing. His grandfather wanted him to sail, so that they could go out on his sailboat when he came to visit. I felt so sorry for him, I felt like I had failed. As an instructor, I hope that they don't just learn about sailing but how to communicate with other people better. I also thought if the next day had a lot of wind that the students would be ready. He went on saying how he didn't have many friends at school that he was up visiting his grandparents at the lake. With Michael's learning disability tying knots was near impossible, but through a lot of 1 on 1 help he was able to do a few of them. That he felt like he had disappointed his grandfather, and that he wasn't as smart as the other grandchildren.
