Hitler and Nazi Germany

In July 1932, Hitler and the Nazi party won 230 seats in the Reichstag elections, becoming the single biggest party in the Reichstag. "Ein volk, ein reich, ein fuhrer". This phrase, which means "one people, one state, one leader" forms the elemental foundation of the Nazi identity. The Nazis governed Germany with a fascist outlook, they believed unity was important. Numerous factors contributed to the Nazi identity, these factors reinforced the concept of unity and they are reflected in the actions taken by the Nazi government. After the loss of World War One, the social atmosphere in Germany was one of bitter resentment. He and future-Nazis were confused about the loss of the war. As far as they knew, Germany had been winning the war until their leaders (the Weimar government) inexplicably called for peace. Like many other Germans, the Nazis believed the "stab in the back" myth. They thought that the Jews were involved in a world-wide conspiracy against Germany, that the Jews were the "enemy within". Inevitably, along with the loss of the war came the Treaty of Versailles which set the terms of peace between Germany and the Allies, this was signed by the Weimar government in 1919. The terms of the t

Anti-Semitic actions gradually gained its own momentum. The loss of World War One, the Treaty of Versailles, anti-semitism and the Weimar government all influenced Nazi identity to some extent and the actions taken by the Nazis to make Germany great again, reflects this identity. The Weimar government had also called for peace and had signed the humiliating Treaty. The Nazis wanted to protect people of pure Germanic descent from "sub-humans" (Jews). The Jews were seen as wealthy and focused on self rather than on the good of the state and of course, there was the popular need to blame someone for problems. Germany conquered Austria, Czechoslovakia and the Sudetenland in 1938. The Nazis also sent "anti-socials" such as gypsies, the work-shy, homosexuals and alcoholics to extermination camps and the "Euthanasia" programme dealt with physically and mentally handicapped people. The Nazis promoted one people by promoting Aryanism and by discriminating other races. All this was reinforced by the propaganda machine which portrayed Hitler as a strong and wise leader. The democratic Weimar government angered the Nazis. Hitler effectively established a dictatorship in 1934 by declaring himself president following the death of former-president Hindenburg. Germany invaded Poland in 1939 and this sparked World War Two. Jews were different, visually and socially. The SA mainly dealt with communists by imprisoning them or by execution.
