Relationships

             In the The Road into the Open by Arthur Schnitzler, the novel reveals an entirety of the subjects on anti-Semitism, assimilation, Zionism, and relationships. Although the novel tends to focus more on Vienna at the turn of the century, relationships still tend to play an important role to help reflect the characteristic differences of each character. Two characters in particular are Georg von Wergenthin and Heinrich Bermann who Schnitzler tends to make foils throughout the novels entirety.
             Georg, the main character has the most complicated time with relationships and is more susceptible to not knowing what he wants with Anna Rosner, whom he impregnates and then later leaves. He has several episodes with women such as Frau, Sissy, Marianne, and Therese. With Anna being impregnated, at the time it seems as a burden to Georg and these women are merely an escape from his own reality of a life. When Anna and Georg take a trip to Lugano, they come in contact with the surprisingly new couple, Demeter and Therese. Georg has his moment of bliss in the garden and they end up kissing. In one scene, Georg is at the salon talking to Sissy about taking a trip with her. He replies, "I'd like to be somewhere with you where no one knew us, where we wouldn't have to worry about anyone, Sissy, many days and nights" (Schnitzler, 110). On several occasions he fantasizes about Sissy and also another girl named Therese. He wonders about how things would be otherwise with Sissy.
             There are many reasons as to why Georg goes astray from Anna. One of the many reasons, and this is brought up a few times, is Anna's economic status and what she wants to become of her life and what social status Georg would be living under. At
             one point, Anna excites the idea of opening a music school. Georg had been pondering the thought of Anna being only of "middle class" when Leo Golowski told Georg that earlier on. ...
