Who's Pledge of Allegiance?The most dreamt of destination by the tragically oppressed citizens of the world is the United States of America. Liberty and democracy are at their greatest here. Around the world people view the United States as the one land where any religious preference is openly admissible. Those wishful worshippers have all lived through persecution and prejudice, far across the oceans. These experiences certainly widen their understanding of government and hopefully create the desire for a land of freedom and democracy.The United States of America is one such land. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." These are the words stated on the Statue of Liberty, which has welcomed immigrants since 1886 when the French gave it as a gift. Hindus, Jews, Christians, Muslims, atheists, and all other religions have sailed under her torch on their journey to freedom. Our homeland is riddled with struggles, historical milestones, and tragedy which have secured the liberties we hold dear. These can not be denied. When the United States Congress accepted "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954, the religious freedom we all share became jeopardized. Destruction, hatred, death, and holy wars have thrived because of religions since biblical times. The Constitution guarantees religious freedom as well as the separation of church and state. Some believe they are a part of a spiritual universe, not under. However, some will always slip through the cracks and carry on evil and oppression in the name of Christianity.
