             SECTION 1: Salient Problem: Low market presence in the growing poultry industry
             Chicken industry analysts in 2000 believed that the market for fresh poultry had peaked whereas sales of prepared and frozen chicken products were expected to continue to grow at a healthy rate. Perdue's growth rate in revenues had been slowly decreasing during the past 20 year. To ensure continued growth of company revenues, Perdue has to design strategies that will tackle the value-added markets. However, Perdue is facing stiff competition from its rival companies, especially the meat products market leader Tyson Foods. Currently Perdue farms owns 8% of the market share in the poultry market whereas Tyson Foods is expected to have 27% market share after the possible purchase with the second market leader, IBP Inc. The meat markets operators are experiencing mergers and consolidations and pretty soon Perdue will be left behind in terms of market capitalization. Therefore, Perdue has to come out with new strategies to win more market in order to survive in the strong competition environments.
             Strategy Alternative 1: International expansion
             Perdue farms can increase their market share by expanding globally. As of fiscal year 2000, international sales only accounted for 5 percent of Perdue revenues. Currently, they have operations in China, Japan and Ukraine. Perdue Farms will benefit from international expansion as it will reduce their dependency on the US market and increase their sales volume. They should look into expanding to India, Bangladesh and their neighboring countries, as there is high potential for growth in the poultry industry in these countries.
