A Rose For Emily: Fawkner
William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" is told from the viewpoint of an anonymous resident of Jefferson, Mississippi, where the Grierson family was the closest thing to true aristocracy. The story presents a powerful argument that privilege can sometimes be a prison. In "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, we see how past events effect the main character Miss Emily, especially her mental state. She seems to live in a sort of fantasy world where death has no real meaning. Miss Emily refuses to accept or even recognize the death of her father or that of Colonel Satoris. She does not want to acknowledge the fact that the world around her was changing therefore Miss Emily surrounds her with death. What Faulkner tries to state in this story is that you should not let death overpower your life. William Faulkner is known as one of the most famed writers. William demonstrated artistic talent at a young age, drawing and writing poetry, but around the sixth grade he began to grow increasingly bored with his studies. The language and dialogue that Faulkner provides Miss Emily with enables the readers to understand how she feels about the town. She is a strong woman with a great sense of tradition but at the same time she suffers from a much skewed perception of the world. This in turn supports the theme of the story, because we see that Miss Emily does not like the idea of change at all. While her seeming insanity drivers her to murder it also seems to be balanced by her character and her strong inner sense of pride, both in herself and in her family. She acts with him as she would have in days gone by. (Faulkner 89) When the people in Jefferson found out that she had purchased the poison they surely all thought that she was going to kill herself. But this is another situation where her underlying mental problems intercede and she goes to far to protect herself, killing Homer with arsenic then sleeping with his dead body every night until her death. After Miss Emily died they had to go to remove her body. This standing heritage and history give her a respected status and the ability to be accepted just as she is. That is another reason why this story is so memorable.
