Odyssey
John Lungo Lungo 1 Odysseus from "The Odyssey" was a brave man who was dedicated to obtaining his one goal: getting back home. Many could say that Odysseus was a great hero who was respected and read about even today. In his story, he proves to be a worthy leader by showing his intelligence and getting his men out of trouble, he has braveness for battling all the monsters and enemies he did, and dedication for his goal to get home. If Odysseus was considered an archetypal hero, I would strongly agree, for this is no doubt that he proves to be one. Throughout his adventures, he faces many hardships and enemies that help him prove that he is an archetypal hero. Being an archetypal hero, Odysseus needs to possess three traits that hold considerable importance. If I were to describe the great Odysseus, one word I would use would definitely be intelligence, or cunning. An example of his unique intelligence is when he and his crew were trapped inside the cyclops cave. When asked his name by Polyphemus, Odysseus smartly replied:so my mother and father call me, all my friends." (Pg. 223).
Ultimately, Odysseus no doubt proves to a the worthy archetypal hero that he is. When Odysseus was stranded on Calypso's island, you could see how heartbroken he was knowing he was stranded and couldn't get home: "The Queen nymph sought out the great Odysseus-the commands of Zeus still ringing in her ears-and found him there on the headland, sitting, still, weeping, his eyes never dry, his sweet life flowing awaywith the tears je wept for his foiled journey home. It is clear that if it wasn't for Odysseus great braveness, he wouldn't have gone far on his journey. To emphasize, Odysseus fits all the needs of being an archetypal hero. If there was one simple word in my opinion that could describe Odysseus, it would be dedication. After Odysseus drank the honey wine and didn't turn into an animal, Circe Lungo 2hugged his knee's and begged him not to kill her, and asked him to go to bed with her. An example of his boldness is, again, in the cyclops cave. He fits each trait that he holds, intelligence, bravery, and dedication, he is of great legendary importance, has committed courageous deeds, and receives supernatural help from Athena. Here, they warned, the worst disaster awaits us. Odysseus' quick thinking earned him the oath from Circe that she would not harm him in anyway, and thanks to Odysseus his crew was changed back to men and later they left unharmed. After getting Polyphemus drunk with wine and waiting until he fell asleep, Odysseus planned to stab the cyclops' eye with a spear. But before Odysseus did anything with her, he cleverly told Circe this: "Circe, Circe, how dare you tell me to treat you with any warmth? You who turned my men to swine in your own house and nowyou lure me to your room to mount your bed,so once I lie there nakedyou'll unman me, strip away my courage!Mount your bed? Not for all the world.
