A renewed interest in teaching character education in public schools has surfaced over the last few years. There is an increased demoralization of children in today's society and concern on what role schools can play in reversing this. Many educators and parents are pushing to bring the teaching of morals back into schools with the hope of changing this trend. James Noll (2001) states, "the schools are failing to provide the moral education they once did; they have abandoned moral teaching" (p. 89). Throughout history, "education has always had two great goals: to help people become smart and to help them become good" (Lickona, 1996). Thomas Lickona (1996) maintains that Horace Mann, the first figure of education, urged morality to be taught to children because democracy demands moral citizens.
Homicidal violence is only one of the fatal dangers that children are turning to with greater frequency. A silent decline of values among America's youth is finally being heard loud and clear. It is no wonder there is a plea to return to teaching virtues in the classroom. The problems of children are getting more serious and more difficult to correct. Teen gambling is reaching an all time high and with it "a cluster of deviant social and personal behavior, including petty theft, heavy borrowing, habitual deceitfulness, and irregular sleeping hours" (Damon, 1995, p. With moral education not being emphasized to today's youth, there has been a great increase of youth violence and self destruction. They praised "values of honesty, hard work, and thrift" (Hall, 2000). According to a 1990 federal study, six of ten high school students say they have used illegal drugs, not counting alcohol, and a survey by Centers for Disease Control stated 40% of American ninth-graders have already had sexual intercourse (Cortland.
