Martin Dressler: The Story of an American Dreamer by Steven Milhauser The book I read was entitled Martin Dressler: The Story of an American Dreamer, written by Steven Milhauser and was 293 pages long. This story takes place New York, New York during the late 19th century when industry was booming and entrepreneurs and inventors were thriving. New York City at the time was growing and expanding at an amazing speed, where buildings were being built so fast they seemed to be "bursting from the bedrock,". Some of the key points in the story happen at the Vanderlyn Hotel where Martin works. Other than when he is traveling, he is mostly stationed at the Bellingham Hotel, where he lives. The most important character in this story is Martin Dressler. The book begins when he is 9 and ends roughly when he is in his mid30s. The book never really describes Martins appearance but you can infer that he is Caucasian, dresses in
I learned that people's dreams can be great success's, if one gives it limits and views it with their heart's desire. The book won a Pulitzer Prize so I guess other people found some meaning in it so they must have enjoyed. Lastly, I learned that the world could never be recreated on a smaller scale within the real world, and one cannot "play god" no matter how much they wish to. I also learned that though life seems to be going your way, you should not get carried away and begin to count on your good luck. Caroline, his wife, in a jealous rage over Martins attention, shoots Emmeline in front of Martin. It was long and drawn out and it took me (a moderately fast reader) 15min. I would rate this book a 2 out of 10 and would recommend it to adults 20 and older because it had some adult themes that I had to skip over, making it hard for me to connect the storyline. The book seemed to have no point, nor plot. I did not enjoy this book at all. He is never satisfied and is always looking to improve anything he is managing. No one but his sister-in-law, Emmeline understands him, so he gets more and more engrossed in literally his own little world. The style of this story is historical adventure. Martin is ambitious to a fault and is always dreaming about bigger and better things. Because it is a story that takes place within a specific time period, I chose this category.
