Breast Cancer

             Breast cancer is a disease in which cancer cells are found in breast tissue. Treatment will depend on the type of breast cancer and stage of the disease. So, two women with the same type of breast cancer may have different treatments because one is more advanced than the other.
             There are 4 different treatments for breast cancer. There are surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and other treatments.
             Surgery is the primary treatment for breast cancer. Its purpose is to remove as much of the cancer as possible. Modified or simple mastectomy are used more often than radical mastectomy, in other words it completely remove the breast tissue and muscle. Generally, surgery also includes removal of some or all of the regional lymph nodes.
             Now, we look at the Radiation Therapy which is the second.
             Radiation therapy is a process that precisely sends high levels of radiation directly to the cancer cells. The process may be accomplished by sending the radiation through the skin like an x-ray process, or by the temporary implantation of radioactive seeds into the cancerous tissue. It kills small areas of cancer that may not be seen during surgery. Radiation may also be done prior to surgery to shrink the tumor and relieve symptoms such as pain.
             The third treatment is chemotherapy.
             Chemotherapy is the use of anti-cancer drugs to treat cancerous cells. Chemotherapy reaches all part of the body, not just the cancer cells. The oncologist will recommend a treatment plan for each patient. Specific treatment will be based on overall health and medical history of the patient, age, the type and stage of the cancer, the patient tolerance for specific medications and procedures, expectations for the course of the disease, and the patient opinion or preference.
