The story develops around a man called Dexter Green, son of the owner of the second best grocery store in Black Bear. Dexter is a boy that comes from an upper class family, yet still knows the importance of working for riches and is fully prepared to do so. He is a caddie to the more wealthy men who meet at the club to play gulf Dexter at his 14 years old is typical good mannered young boy who dreams of one day being wealthy enough to have his own caddie. He is a hard working boy, that is known and respected as one of the top caddies of the golf course in Black Bear. One day he meets Judy Jones, a wealthy , beautiful girl who all the men feel attracted to her at the club where he worked. He felt very attracted to her and soon realized that if he caddied for the young girl, he will never be able to have her because of his "inferior" conditions. Unexpectedly eighteen months after he met Judy Jones he became engaged to a different girl named Irene. Judy represents Dexter's pursue of a better lifestyle. Caddying would show his lower social standing and therefore in her mind he would not have a chance. This dream is a common American ideal which contributes to "the American Dream". CommentaryThis is not a love story nor a fairy tale but this is a story that exemplifies the American Lifestyle at the 1920's. He chooses to quit his job rather than caddy, but this was not only because of Judy but for his own dreams of becoming successful his "winter dreams" . By the end of the story, when Dexter watches his beautiful vision crumble, he is forced to admit the illusory nature of his winter dreams. The moment perhaps Dexter has waited all his life to hear from Judy, but now ironically its his turn to be concerned because of his engagement with Irene unfortunately Dexter was weak and he finally accepted Judy's proposal and broke up with Irene. Dexter's vision of success involves a pursuit of the American dream of wealth and status, he is character that embodies all the American qualities, defects, and characteristics such as hard working in order to gain success. The two do meet again as Judy came back home. His second engagement was later finished by Judy herself. Her beauty and innocence lost, a bad husband and kids. Yet he fails to see the hollowness beneath Judy's surface, a hollowness that is also at the core of her world.
