Falling leaves
The true story of an unwanted daughterSo far the characters have just been introduced and you don't really know much about the characters. The prologue is really confusing and you have to read it twice to understand what they are talking about because it is vital for you to understand the story. In the beginning the family meets because their father had died. There are five brothers and sisters, Lydia, Gregory, Edgar, James and Adeline and one half sister Susan. And there is also the stepmother Niang (which is a Chinese term for mother). They were meeting because their father's testament and they are all astonished that he has not left them any money, he was a very wealthy man with many companies and houses. Niang said that their father wouldn't have liked if they had questioned his testament and nobody dared to question it anyway. They were all afraid of Niang who had made their lives hard enough. This is when Adeline recounts from the beginning when she was little and how this all came along. Chapter one is really interesting and it talks about how Adeline's great aunt gained independence, she didn't like her feet bound and wanted to do what she wanted. She was
Then Shanghai fell in the war and Adeline had had to flew to Hong Kong were Adeline was then placed into a orphanage. She sounds like a woman who was after his money because all the exquisite gifts he gave her before they even married. Adeline, Gregory and James still had contact with her but James then became influenced by Niang, he was obeying her every order and he always listened and she took credit for every success and blamed James for every failure. In 1989 Niang was diagnosed untreatable cancer and she wanted to see Adeline and her children for Christmas. Adeline's marriage was falling apart and when her husband bought a restaurant their savings were quickly vanishing into the place but he sold it again and then decided to go to Hong Kong for a year. Franklin and Susan were always the pampered ones; they always got what they wanted. A few days later Adeline got a divorce lawyer and they got divorced, he moved to Hong Kong and he never saw or wrote to his son again. She didn't have any friends while working at the hospital and they didn't like her because she was a female and Chinese and her English wasn't prefect. This book is unique, I haven't read anything that is like this and the author had in mind to tell the story like it really happen not changing it to make it more interesting or less dramatic. Then her father met Jeanne Virginie Prosperi who he married. It was her brother James who she was closest to, maybe because he had been though nearly the same as she had been and he also was the youngest so she could relate to him better. Though the marriage was a complete disaster, outwardly it appeared as a nice wholesome Chinese American family. Her father also never really cared about her, she always got the best grades in school and the highest marks but he never showed any excitement. She had the greatest reputation and the whole family even father and grandfather granted her every wish.
