The Same-Sex Marriage Debate

             Gay rights have been a very controversial issue in the past fifty years. The oppression of homosexuals has been an expanding focus in our media and society. After reaching a satisfactory level of equality within gay rights after the Equal Rights Act of 1973, the opportunity of gay marriages is the next battle for equality (Bryan 2). The rising of these discriminatory limitations against homosexuals has aggravated individuals, couples and has brought alert to the government. Restrictions on same-sex marriages should not be placed upon citizens because it takes away a person's freedom and follows an outdated sense of morality.
             The evolution of marriage has taken a path similar to every other controversial and discriminatory act in our society. Many past and current historical situations involving our government forced citizens into a lower status of living and have resulted in a violation of their freedom. The history of our countries marriage laws has evolved over time because of the restrictions that infringe upon our freedom rights; an example of this concept is displayed through the trends of America's marriage laws. America's history includes restrictions on marriages, but the result of each situation has ended with the government uplifting the restriction because of the infringement on our freedom rights. In the early 19th Century, marriage was allowed to take place between two Caucasian adults of the opposite gender. In the 1950s, blacks were finally allowed to marry, but only into their own race. It was against the law for two people with different skin colors to get married. As many mixed raced relationships were occurring between slaves and their masters, in 1967 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Loving vs. Virginia court case that mixed raced partners were permitted to marry (Stiers 9).
