             As a child you dream of being married, having kids and living happily ever after. The day has finally arrived and you marry the man or woman of your dreams. Is this the person whom you were supposed to marry? Will this relationship last till death do you part? Who's to say you will not have an affair. Affairs occur on a daily basis. Everyone has his or her reason for being unfaithful.
             In the short stories, The Lady with the Dog (Chekhov) and The Lady with the Pet Dog (Oates), infidelity plays a huge part. The characters in both stories knew it was wrong, but gave reasons for their unfaithfulness. In both stories the characters feelings about their spouse, infidelity, and their relationship with their lovers were not the same.
             The lady with the Dog (Chekhov), Dmitri and his wife did not see eye to eye. His wife considered herself "staid, dignified, and intellectual" (Chekhov p.871). His wife also "read a great deal and used phonetic spelling" (Chekhov p. 871). Dmirti did not see her this way. He thought of her as "unintelligent and inelegant" (Chekhov p. 871). Dmitri felt as if she "loved without any genuine feeling" (Chekhov p.874).
             Anna (The Lady with the Pet Dog, Oates) is not "comfortable" (Oates p.884) with her husband. There is "always this hot flashing of shame between them" (Oates p. 885). Anna thought her husband's love making was "clumsy" (Oates p. 885). It was as if "the pace of [a] dance was too rigorous for them" (Oates p. 884).
             Dmitri is open and honest about his infidelities. "He begin being unfaithful to his wife long ago" (Chekhov p 872). Even though he is unfaithful to his wife, he seemed bitter about his experiences (Chekhov p. 872) He referred to women as the "lower race" (Chekhov p.871), but could not go two days without them (Chekhov p. 872).
