             "And a Lie Shall Set You Free"
             Nothing could have been harder than having lived during the German occupation of either the ghettos, or worse, the Concentration camps during World War II. Prisoners used many methods to keep themselves alive. In both the films "Life Is Beautiful" and "Jakob the Liar", the main character lies to provide hope for their loved ones, in order to strengthen their morale, and therefore to improve their chances of survival.
             In "Life Is Beautiful, we are introduced to Guido, a opportunistic clown who enjoys a wonderful sense of living. Guido is a Jewish man who is blessed with a colorful imagination and an irresistible sense of humor. In the beginning of the movie, we are privy to his comic courtship of a Christian woman, Dora. They eventually get married and have a son named Joshua, creating a beautiful life for his young family and living happily for five years. Guido's relationship with his son is one of "magic" and games. Guido would do anything for both his son and his wife.
             Tragically, a day before Joshua's birthday, Guido and Joshua are taken away to an Italian Concentration camp, along with his wife, who voluntarily goes herself in order to stay with her family. Guido now must rely on his strengths to save his beloved wife and son from the horrors of the camps.
             Aboard the transport trains on the way to the camps, Guido is conscious of his son's fear, so he decides to make up a string of lies to minimize his son's terror and to keep him safe. Guido tells his son that they are on their way to a birthday party, a game; one that he experienced himself when he was child, one that is great fun.
             Upon arrival at the camp, Guido continues this deception by falsely translating a German guard's speech regarding camp rules. Guido volunteers to translate the guard's speech from German to Italian, despite the fact he doesn'...
