Cultural Differences
The world is made up of people of all kinds of religions and cultures from many different nationalities. In SMU, people come from all over the globe. In my English class, I was asked to conduct an interview with a fellow classmate of mine, Diane Lee from Taiwan. Some of our similarities and differences are given based under some general topics. The topics under which I have compared and contrasted her and myself are Cultural background, attitude towards SMU and mental outlook Cultural background is a very vast and widespread topic. Diane is a Christian and she goes to Church every Sunday. I do not think she celebrates as many festivals and holidays as we do in India. The most famous holiday in her culture is the Chinese New Year at which time nobody goes to work and everybody relaxes and takes it easy. We, in India have many festivals and holidays throughout the year the most popular being Diwali (the festival of lights) and H
She is an indecisive person and is very far away from reality and likes to imagine things. . I think Diane's picture of SMU is very different from what she thought it would be like. Diane is very positive in her thinking and she can recover from a bad mood very soon. She found it very clean and neat with lots of trees and flowers. She is a soft and calm person and sensitive in every way and likes to help others whenever possible. It is a wonderful atmosphere and I am very happy to be here though I do miss home as well. I knew it would be a big and beautiful campus but I did not realize that the people would be so warm and friendly. I somewhat had an idea what it would be like as I have seen my brother's campus who studies at Cornell University. I have learned a great deal by meeting various people and interacting and understanding their way of thinking and their frame of mind. Attitude towards SMU is a subject that is normally different to every individual. I am a very determined person and will finish the task no matter what it takes. We have quite a few differences being from different backgrounds and cultures but there are certain similarities as well.
