A job after high school can solve many problems for students coming out of school. It may provide an income that is suitable to make it through some tough times. It keeps the student busy and out of trouble for the hours that they work, and could provide a sense of responsibility by trying to keep their job and pleasing the boss. Although when one looks at these details more closely many disadvantages begin to present themselves. The wages received for the long hard hours is minimal and a sense of security has vanished, the fear of not having a job the following day is now present. So, a job after high school may seem more appealing at first; however, a college education is a better investment for a better life.

A college education will increase a child's ability to understand developments in science and in society, to think abstractly and critically, to express thoughts clearly in speech and in writing, and to make wise decisions. These skills are useful both on and off the job. Many people begin to discover attributes and skills about themselves that can redefine their goals and perspective about life. For example, a person who thought of becoming a mechanic or engineer can realize that his true craze is in art or poetry. By attending a college, this person can experience what being a mechanic is truly like by attending classes that relate to that field. This would not be possible by having a job because this person would not be able to experience different careers due to the fact that they do not have the advantage of trail and error.
