O' Odessey Where Art Thou
- A Comparison between The Coen Brothers' O Brother Where Art Thou? and Homer's Odyssey. The Coen Brothers' O Brother Where Art Thou?, loosely based on Homer's Odyssey, is the story of three chain gang escapees and their exploits in depression-era Mississippi. The movie not only presents an adapted retelling of Homer's Odyssey in terms of plot and character development, but also mirrors some of the major themes and structure of the original work. Similarities between the movie and Homer's work are both obvious and implied, whereas differences can often be attributed to the modernizing of the classical work. An analysis of O Brother Where Art Thou?, contrasting and comparing the movie with the epic upon which it is based, is an intriguing endeavor. This analysis will focus upon structure, plot, characters and themes of both works, with the underlying supposition that portions of the movie are based upon a modernizing of the ancient tale.A concise retelling of the movie begins with the escaping of the three chain gang members. Ulysses Everett Mcgill (George Clooney), Pete (John Turturro) and Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson ), are joined to the same chain, and escape in the hopes of recovering previously buried
Ulysses'intelligence is demonstrated from his pre-penal farm experiences, when he practiced law without a license. He also pardons the three on account that their "rambunctious days are over" The story, however, is not complete. The opening sequence of O Brother Where Art Thou? sets the tone for the similarities between the Odyssey and the movie. As for the Cyclops and Big Daniel Teague, they share similar characteristics, the most obvious of which is having only one eye. It is a story of adventure, journey and transformation, all in the quest to return home. The one eyed bible salesman in the movie is also a lawless savage and neither plows nor plants. Waldrip's engagement ring, a diamond encrusted masterpiece, stands in sharp contrast to Ulysses' simple wedding band. As for the Cyclops and Big Daniel Teague, they share similar characteristics, the most obvious of which is having only one eye. 328 - 331)A distraught Delmar also expresses his unhappiness at the situation -"no, not the livestock!", but his distaste may hinge upon his love of the family farm rather than a revelation that slaughtering cattle would bring misfortune to the trio. Perhaps the most significant difference between the movie and the epic is the story of Penelope in Homer vs. When Delmar proclaims "Them sirens loaded him up and turned him into a horny toad", Ulysses responds, "Way I see it he got what he deserved, fornicating with some whore ofBabylon. Busting out alone was not an option.
