Euthanasia

             "Life is a precious gift that should be cherished, preserved, and enhanced in every way possible. But when the potential for meaningful, joyful, desirable life has been exhausted and every effort made to prevent the inevitable, we should make it legally possible for the merciful to show mercy to those who request intervention to end their intolerable suffering" (Algra 54). Euthanasia should be legalized so if we ever have a loved one who is suffering, and death is certain, we should have the choice to end one's pain at one's will. Whether active euthanasia, passive euthanasia, or physician assisted suicide is chosen, one should have the right to decide the manner of his own death.
             Many people are against euthanasia because they see it as killing and believe it should be banned under any circumstances. Algra says it "turns doctors from healers into killers and could result in many lives ending early because of incorrect prognosis or diagnosis" (54). Those who are against euthanasia believe that life is important and that everyone's life can be improved no matter how bad it may seem. Even if patients are on life-support equipment, prolonging their life will let them die a natural death instead of killing them and going against the law. But, "longer lives are not necessarily better ones" (Lederman153).
             Many believe euthanasia is a good thing under certain circumstances and should be allowed. Euthanasia let's people die without the pain and allows the person to die with dignity and honor instead of letting their bodies deteriorate from diseases. People came to the United States to be free and if euthanasia is illegal it will take away their freedom and their rights. Everyone has the right to be allowed to choose if they want to live or die.
