Vitamin C
The topic chosen in this paper is vitamin C. Although vitamin C is a very important nutrient in the body, it is essential to understand the body's chemistry and how it works before understanding how vitamin C actually works and is broken down in the body. The purpose is to explain the exact chemistry occurring in the body and then discuss the importance of vitamin C and other minerals. Like every form of life found in this world, the human body is made up of different chemicals. When these elements are brought together and react with each other, the body can then produce the substances it needs to build itself up, and the energy it needs to stay alive. According to The Concise Encyclopedia of the Human Body "The human body contains a vast number of atoms, arranged in a highly organized way. An atom, which is made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons, is the smallest part of an element that can exist on its own. In the human body most atoms do not exist separately, instead they from parts of chemical compounds"(20). Just a little over 90 elements occurs naturally on the Earth, and of those elements only 25 are found in the human body. The Concise Encyclopedia of the Human Body points out that"Four of the 25 elements-carbon,
New York: Health Letter Associates, 1992. It differs from starch in that it cannot be digested, instead it passes through the body and forms a major part of dietary fiber. In order for the body to function properly, the human body needs a regular supply of nutrients. Many plant oils are unsaturated which means their carbon chains contain at least one double bond. The body uses the element oxygen to release energy in a process called aerobic respiration. " Just as it would be absolutely impossible to drive a car with out some kind of fuel (gasoline) it would be impossible for our bodies to survive with out some kind of fuel. Fructose, which is found in fruit and honey and sucrose, which is found in plant sap, are two types of sugar that can give the body an almost instant energy supply. Nutrients supply your body with energy, and they also supply the body with the raw materials that it needs to grow and repair itself. New York: Avery Publishing Group, 1997. They are very common in the body and can also be found in meat, eggs, and dairy products. A molecule is made up of atoms held together by chemical bonds. Cellulose, which is similar to starch, can be found in vegetables and in other plant-based foods. Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements.
